Week 17/18 Update

Tonne up for Donner

Steve Donner, Alfreton SC ‘A’

Over the festive period, with only a handful of matches taking place and a week until league fixtures resumed, the standout moment came from an impromptu Premier competition match between Jack Morton and Steve Donner. Fresh from their rescheduled 4-1 league win against Brotherhood ‘A’, the duo returned to Alfreton SC to play their singles match. Despite the late hour, the contest wrapped up just before closing time.

Morton started stronger, reaching the point where Donner needed snookers. However, Donner, whose safety play is often underrated, responded well. He managed to get the snookers required and followed up with a decisive clearance to take the first frame. Riding a wave of confidence, Steve opened the second frame with a break of 24 but faltered shortly after. A loose safety shot from Jack gave Steve another opportunity, and Donner capitalised, compiling his second century of the season – a brilliant 109 clearance.

Lifted by his form, Steve quickly gained control in the third frame, with another century seeming imminent. Unfortunately, his break ended on the final red, but he still closed the match in style with an impressive 91 break.

After the match, Steve admitted he feels capable of scoring heavily every time he steps up to the table – and his recent performances suggest he’s right. With momentum firmly on his side, all eyes will be on Steve to see how he performs in the second half of the season.

Brotherhood’s Kieron Stevenson was also thrilled to notch a century break this week, even if it came during a friendly match against his clubmate, Matt Large. Stevenson demonstrated he’s still got the skills with an impressive 110 break. Later, he took to Facebook to share a light-hearted jab:

“Nice effort, Mr. Donner, with your 109 :)”
